I saw a dog chase some ducks by running down a steep bank into the river the other day. The ducks flew off in time and the dog ended up in the river, which had a fairly strong current and so dragged the dog down stream. The dog couldn’t get up the bank on the far side so then tried to swim back across. At first I was glad the stupid dog got its comeuppance for worrying the ducks, then I thought well maybe it’s the owner’s fault for letting it off its leash. Then I thought; no really, stupid dog, but I hope it doesn’t die because then I’ll feel bad. It then deftly climbed out on the other side, and the owner showed up not seeming in the least alarmed, whilst I was left with a mass of conflicting emotions about something that was nothing to do with me.
